The arts are alive at Island Coast High School. Our arts electives include 2-D and 3-D visual arts classes, band, and theatre. ICHS students have several opportunities to showcase their artistic talents through displays of student artwork around the school and in public exhibitions, as well as through regular public performances by our music and theater programs.
Music
Our music program includes three concert ensembles ranging in ability levels from a beginning level to advance. The program includes a Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Band. From “newbie” to seasoned instrumentalist, there is a band for you in the gator music program!
The Jazz Band at ICHS has been cookin’ up some great tunes! Even with shortened instrumentation, this band has continued to strive for excellence. Students in this class study genres in the jazz and pop idioms and learn basic improvisation skills. The most proficient soloists and rhythm section players will find themselves playing in the jazz combo and performing for special events both on and off school campus.
One of the most exciting experiences is being a part of the Gator Marching Band. You can find The Gator Band in the stands cheering on the teams, hyping up the home side and taking the field at half time. A student in the marching band can expect to learn about life skills like organization, timeliness and attention to detail. Most importantly, they can make friends and gain experiences they will remember and cherish. The Marching Gator Band is supposed to be regimented but more importantly; it’s supposed to be fun. Add some rockin’ music and moves to it and you have a great learning environment!
Visual Arts
Classes include Drawing I and II, AP Art, AICE Art, and Ceramics. In Drawing I and II Students experiment with the media and techniques used to create a variety of two-dimensional (2-D) artworks through the development of skills in drawing. Students practice, sketch, and manipulate the structural elements of art to improve mark making and/or the organizational principles of design in a composition from observation, research, and/or imagination. Through the critique process, students evaluate and respond to their own work and that of their peers. AP and AICE art students focus on developing portfolios of their work, experimenting with a variety of media and creating works of art with focus on a central topic.
In Ceramics, the students will learn more about the field of visual arts through hand building techniques using the Ceramic medium. The students will be taught how to create functional and artistic pieces using clay. They will also learn the technical skills involved in creating sculptures from clay, while encouraging their own creativity through structured assignments that leave room for personal expression and creativity.
Theatre
Our theatre students participate in at least two large scale performances per year, learning every aspect of theatrical production from acting to technical tasks behind the scenes. Past productions over the last few years have included Clue, Mean Girls, and The Addams Family.
