Athletic Director Thimlar

Terry Thimlar

For Terry Thimlar, sports and the business of sports has been his life and passion.  In 1972, he graduated from Pike High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, helping to lead his basketball team to a sectional and regional championship.  At Edison Community College (FSW), he was a two year starter, earned his A.A. degree and was a Phi Theta Kappa national honoree.  Following E.C.C., Terry earned his B.S. degree in economics at Indiana State University while also serving as a student assistant for the Sycamores men’s basketball team.  In his senior year at I.S.U., the team finished the season 25-2 and participated in the prestigious NIT.

After I.S.U., he was hired by the University of Florida as an assistant coach for the 1977-78 basketball season.  After one season with the Gators, he returned to Indiana State as the lead assistant coach. In the 1978-79 season, Indiana State finished the year with a perfect 28-0 regular season record, the #1 ranking in the country, and the #1 seed in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.  The season ended when Indiana State, led by Larry Bird, lost one of the most memorable NCAA Championship games in basketball history to Michigan State, which was led by Earvin “Magic” Johnson.  During his three years as an assistant, he was also responsible for conducting the youth summer basketball camps for the Sycamores.  In addition, he began his own basketball camp, The Thimlar Basketball Camp, in Fort Myers, Florida, developing all marketing and business operations.

In 1986, Terry became the head boys’ basketball coach at Cypress Lake High School and in 1994, opened Lehigh Senior High School as its first head boys’ basketball coach.  But Indiana basketball called Terry back and in 1996, he was hired as the head boys’ basketball coach at the basketball powerhouse, Muncie Central High School, Muncie, Indiana.  His summer camp followed him to each of these schools and was highly successful from the business side and in the fundamentals and techniques of basketball.

In the fall of 1999, Terry was hired as the athletic director for the new Dunbar High School in Fort Myers. This is where his sports and business background came rising to the top.  He was responsible for every aspect of beginning and developing the total athletic department.  His responsibilities included, but not limited to: all budgeting, hiring of coaches, designing of all athletic facilities including the baseball and softball complex, the football stadium and locker rooms, the track and field complex and tennis center, the sports complex which included the gymnasium, fitness room, training room, wrestling room, varsity locker rooms, equipment and laundry rooms and athletic offices. He created the support network for manpower needs in all sports, solicited involvement from the corporate sector and marketed the entire athletic program.

In the spring of 2004, Terry organized an investor/ownership group that purchased a NBA Development League team, the official minor league of the NBA, thus becoming the first privately owned team in the NBA Development League.  Terry negotiated all aspects in the process to purchase the team and in the operating agreement with the Development League.  For the Florida Flame, Terry served as team general manager and assistant coach for Dennis “DJ” Johnson (Naismith Hall of Fame member) in the 2004-05 season.  And in the 2005-06 season, Terry was the team general manager and assistant coach for Jeff Malone (13 year NBA veteran and three time NBA All-Star).  As general manager he oversaw all business operations of the team including budgeting, sales, marketing, media, public and community relations.  The NBA Development League is owned and operated by the NBA.

Terry is excited about being part of the Island Coast High School family and looks forward to every aspect of the “green and gold” academic and athletic world. Let’s GO GATORS!
