Game Design

Gaming Simulation Curriculum

Island Coast High School offers a comprehensive and rigorous Gaming & Simulation Curriculum.  The program offers a sequence of project-based courses that provide students with relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in Information Technology such as Game Designer, Game Graphic Artist, Game 3-D Animator, Game Programmer and Game Software Developer.

The four year progression starts with Game & Simulation Foundations and Game & Simulation Design covers conceptualization, design, storyboarding, and development methodologies.   After successful completion of the first two courses, the student may choose the Graphic Artist/Animator path or the Gaming Programming path.

Course Progression

First Year: Game & Simulation Foundations (8208110)

Game & Simulation Foundations is designed to provide an introduction to game and simulation concepts and careers.  Design concepts covered are rule design, play mechanics and media integration.  This course also compares and contrasts games and simulations, key development methodologies and tools, careers, and industry related information.  Beginning Storyboarding will be covered as well as the opportunity to earn the Toon Boom Storyboard Pro certification.

Second Year: Game & Simulation Design (8208120)

Game & Simulation Design is only available to the second year students who have a successfully completed Game & Simulation Foundations.  This course covers the fundamental principles of designing a game, rules and strategies of play, use of sound and animation, design tools and implementation issues.  Students will have the opportunity to earn a certification in Adobe Animate CC

Graphic Artist/Animator Path

Third Year: Game & Simulation Graphic Artist (8208130)

Game & Simulation Graphic Artist is only available to third year students upon successful completion of Game & Simulation Design.  This course is focused on creating, refining and integrating realistic 2D graphics into a game or simulation product.  Students will have the opportunity to earn a certification in Adobe Photoshop CC and/or Adobe Illustrator CC.

Fourth Year: Game & Simulation 3D Graphic Animator (8208140)

Game & Simulation 3D Graphic Animator is only available to fourth year students upon successful completion of Game & Simulation Graphic Artist.  This course is focused on creating, refining and integrating realistic 3D graphics into a game or simulation product.

Gaming Programming Path

Third Year: Game & Simulation Programming (8208330)

Game & Simulation Programming is only available to third year students upon successful completion of Game & Simulation Design.  This course is focused on acquiring the appropriate programming skills for rendering a game or simulation product.  Topics covered include: program control, conditional branching, and score keeping.  Students will have the opportunity to earn the Microsoft Technology Associate in JavaScript certification.

Fourth Year: Multi-User Game & Simulation Programming (8208340)

Multi-User Game & Simulation Programming is only available to fourth year students upon successful completion of Game & Simulation Programming.  This course is focused on acquiring the appropriate programming skills for rendering a game or simulation including program control, conditional branching, score keeping and timed event strategies for multi-user game/simulation products.

Toon Boom Storyboard Pro is a digital storyboarding software that allows students to visually explore and organize their creative ideas. A storyboard is a series of static images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing a film, animation, or game.

Animate CC is a popular animation software program used to designvector graphicsand animation sequences used in television programs, videos, web applications and video games.


Microsoft Technology Associate - JavaScript

Microsoft

JavaScript is the programming language of the web.  It is used to enhance webpages to provide a richer user experience including dynamically updating web pages, user interface enhancements such as menus and dialog boxes, animations, 2D and 3D graphics, interactive maps, and video players.
